Airbrix Bespoke
Home  /  About the studio

A workshop, not a showroom.

We started Airbrix in 2011 with two benches, a planer that broke twice in the first month, and a stubborn conviction that bespoke furniture in Malaysia should be made within driving distance of the people who will live with it.

The early years

How we ended up in Bukit Jelutong.

Airbrix began as a side project between two cabinetmakers who had spent a decade making furniture for someone else's name on the door. The first piece we built together was a low oak coffee table for a friend's apartment in Bangsar. It took three weekends. We've been busy ever since.

By 2014 we had outgrown the original lean-to in Sungai Buloh and moved to our current home in Taman Perindustrian Bukit Jelutong. The workshop occupies just under 7,000 square feet — joinery on the right side, upholstery on the left, finishing room and timber storage in between.

We have stayed deliberately small. Nine cabinetmakers, two upholsterers, a finisher, and the two of us running the studio. Big enough to take a full restaurant fit-out. Small enough that the person who quotes your sofa is also the person who hands it off the truck.

What we will and won't do

A short manifesto, written for ourselves.

A

Solid timber, kiln-dried

Mostly American walnut, white oak, and Malaysian chengal for legs and frames. We do not use particleboard in load-bearing parts — ever.

B

Joinery you can see

Through-tenons left visible. Dovetails proud, not flush-sanded. We are quietly proud of how the pieces are held together.

C

Finishes that breathe

Hard-wax oil and water-based lacquer. Easier to repair, kinder to indoor air quality. Polyurethane only where it earns its place.

D

Honest delivery dates

Quoted lead times come with a calendar week, not a vague "soon". We have missed three dates in the last forty months.

Who works the bench

The team behind your piece.

Most of our cabinetmakers came up through the same furniture trade school in Klang. Two trained as boatbuilders before joining us, which explains the lamination work on our curved chair backs. Our upholstery lead spent fifteen years at a London workshop before moving home in 2019.

You won't meet a sales team here because we don't have one. The person who takes your enquiry is one of three studio managers. They handle your project end-to-end — drawings, quoting, sign-off, delivery follow-up.

We had Airbrix make our dining set in 2019. Six years on, three of those chairs have been re-glued once and the table top has been re-oiled twice — both at the workshop, both included in the warranty. That kind of after-sale service is the reason we went back to them for the new beds.
